Dana Hills High School needs $54.2 million in construction upgrades, renovations and improvements to bring the school up to current state standards, according to an architect hired by Capistrano Unified School District.

Of that figure, $14.7 million would pay to replace half of the existing portable classrooms with new, permanent facilities. Another $3 million is needed for deferred routine maintenance and repairs, including to the roofing, paving and fencing

The total amount also includes the cost of a new performing arts theater, bleachers and auxiliary gymnasium.

Dana Hills has a number of deficiencies, according to a 2009 report by WLC Architects in Rancho Cucamonga. In the event of an emergency, firefighters cannot gain access to 6,190 square feet of the school's buildings.

The report was created in 2009 and has recently been updated for 2013 pricing. The district is facing $822 million worth of needs and only has about $44 million on hand to address them.
