Architect: R.H. Dana Schools Need $9.5 Mil in Renovations

Overall, Capistrano Unified has $822 million in identifiable needs. Here is R.H. Dana Elementary and R.H. Dana Exceptional Needs schools' share.

Collectively, the two schools that start off “R.H. Dana” and which share a campus could use $9.5 million in renovations.

That’s the word from an architectural firm the Capistrano Unified School District hired in 2009 to examine the district’s facility needs. The report was recently updated with 2013 pricing. The district is facing $822 million worth of needs and only has about $44 million on hand to address them.

R.H. Dana Elementary and R.H. Dana Exceptional Needs School need $2.4 million to replace half of the portables on the two campuses. In addition, the schools have $2 million in deferred maintenance projects, including paint and intercom systems. The elementary school also needs repairs to the floor covering and paving.

The updated total also includes $576,000 for upgraded technology for students at the Dana Point schools.

Both schools are among six district-wide that have potentially serious structural issues that could represent a danger, according to the architects.
