'Jaws' Premiered 37 Years Ago Today; D.P. No Stranger to Sharks
The film scared many away from the ocean, but it was a blockbuster at the box office. There have been some shark sightings reported in Dana Point recently.
It may be hard to believe, but on this day in 1975, Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg, hit the big screen.
While it was a huge blockbuster, it made countless viewers afraid to go into the water.
The story of a great white shark that terrorizes a New England resort town became became the highest-grossing film in movie history until it was bested by 1977's Star Wars. Jaws was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Picture category and took home three Oscars, for Best Film Editing, Best Original Score and Best Sound, according to History.com.

In Dana Point there have been some recent shark sightings.
In July 2011, a rare occurrence in local waters, Captain Todd Mansur of Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching spotted a great white shark and was able to catch it all on YouTube video here.
