Parents to Screen Documentary about Prescription Drugs

Here's what's going on at Laguna Niguel and Dana Point schools.

Later this month, students at Niguel Hills Middle School will attend a screening of “Overtaken,” a documentary made by two Laguna Niguel moms, highlighting teens’ prescription drug problem in South Orange County. 

Parents will also get a chance to prescreen the movie before their children. The parents’ preview night is 7 p.m. Feb. 21.

The film’s creators and some of the individuals featured in the movie will be present, along with local health professionals.  Also present will be Mike Darnold, who handles substance abuse interventions at Dana Hills High School. 

Darnold has worked with young people for many years, and will share what you as parents can do to help your kids continue to live a healthy lifestyle and avoid the pitfalls of drug abuse.

Students will watch the film Feb. 26.

Aliso Niguel High:  The school is asking student and parents to be courteous to the neighbors during drop-off and after school The owners of the office complex at the top of Wolverine Way (the corner of Wolverine Way and Aliso Creek) are asking that students should not be dropped off or picked up in their private parking lot. Additionally, please do not cut through the office parking lot as a short cut.

The Sheriff’s department has also notified ANHS that many parents are parking along the restricted OCTA bus drop-off area on the northwest corner of Alicia and Aliso Creek Road. The Sheriff’s Department will continue to enforce the no stopping/parking zone with tickets.

R.H. Dana Elementary: Students at R.H. Dana are already thinking about college. In February, each grade level will show a few scenes/video from the website of their grade level’s college and have students write a journal entry about what it might be like to go to this college.  The trimester will culminate with a visit from a Saddleback College outreach student coming to speak to R.H. Dana students, who are encouraged to don their college spirit wear to school every Thursday.  This is a fun way to support the importance of a college education in the future.  

Dana Hills High: The school’s plastic bottles and aluminum cans community recycling drive is this Saturday, Feb. 9. Please bring your plastic bottles and aluminum cans to DHHS from 9-11 a.m. this Saturday and help raise funds for our school. Please spread the word to family, friends and neighbors! Location: DHHS back parking lot near the tennis courts and pool. Thank you for your support!

Laguna Niguel Elementary: The Laguna Niguel Foundation is hosting a fundraising fun night of ice skating. Come join the fun from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8 at the Ice Palace in Aliso Viejo. Grab a friend and have a cool time! The cost is only $17 per student, including skates; 50 percent of the entry fee goes directly to the LNES Foundation.

The Foundation will be preselling tickets after school between 1:45-2:15 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

Moulton Elementary: On Valentine's Day, Moulton students will jump rope before they eat lunch to raise money for the American Heart Association.  Please consider making a donation (checks only please-no cash!) to support this wonderful fundraiser. Students can also log on and have fun creating their own page on Moulton's American Heart Association's website. Instructions are on page two of the letter sent home with your child. For children to participate, they need to turn in the permission slip found on the inside of the donation envelope to their teacher before the day of the event.  Envelopes are due on Valentine's Day, and be sure your child wears comfortable clothing on that day as well.  Start practicing now, and we will confirm what everyone knows ... that Moulton's got heart!

Niguel Hills Middle: It’s coat drive time, time to go through those closets and drawers and pull out all your “gently used” coats, jackets, sweatshirts and sweaters that you’ve outgrown or have  gotten tired of wearing.  We are looking to bring in 100 coats this year to break our record from last year.  Don’t for forget to ask your family, friends and neighbors to donate.   Students are encouraged to bring their coats to their first period classroom. The deadline is Wednesday, Feb. 13.
