UPDATED: 'Stubborn' Blaze Burns Laguna Niguel Condo, Displaces Mom, 3 Children

A woman, her two children and a friend were rescued from a fire that caused an estimated $1 million in damage to adjoining condominiums in Laguna Niguel early today, authorities said.

The woman -- identified as Dari Marcos -- told a videographer she and her two boys, aged 15 and 10, and an 11 year-old male friend, were awakened about 11:40 p.m. by a smoke alarm in their two-story condominium in the 30200 block of Via Reata and discovered their residence was full of smoke.

The family and a small dog survived without injury, according to authorities.

Orange County Fire Authority spokesman Captain Steve Concialdi said the fire started in an unoccupied adjoining condo that was under renovation, and spread through a common attic that was shared by two other condos as well.

The fire caused a combined $900,000 in external damage to both structures, and $100,000 in damage to the interiors, Concialdi said.

Sixty firefighters from both the Orange County Fire Authority and Laguna Beach Fire Department fought the blaze, which Concialdi described as "very stubborn."

The fire was knocked down in just over an hour.

No injuries were reported.

Concialidi said the Red Cross was assisting with accomodation for Marcos and her sons.
