Sellers Stay Calm During Negotiations

Sellers think long and hard before putting their homes on the market. Admittedly, you didn’t take the decision lightly, but here you are, and you have exactly what you were looking for – you have an offer on your home.

My best advice is to stay calm during negotiations; we’re almost there. This is the time to keep a level head, and not be swayed in one direction or the other. We need to stay focused.

Tips To Help You Stay Calm During Negotiations

  • Trust Your Agent: There’s a reason he/she was your first choice to sell your home. Likely, you considered their communication and negotiation skills. Now is the time to trust your decision.
  • Be Prepared: Your mind and body needs to be prepared for the big decisions ahead of you. Make sure to get plenty of food and rest.
  • Communicate: Communicate with your agent, mate, business partner, and everyone involved.
  • Calm Your Mind: It’s never been more important to take the emotion out of the equation and to make an informed decision. You will best do this by calming your mind. If you like to meditate, do so. If you can relax by listening to music, do so. Most importantly though, calm your mind before looking at the figures.
  • Do The Math: Look at the figures. Can you afford to take this offer? Is it possible this is the best offer you can expect? Is it too low?
  • Don’t Take It Personal: If you receive a low ball offer, you can’t take it personal. Likely the buyer/investor is simply looking at this as a business decision. The worst case scenario is a counter offer.
  • Stay Out Of It: This is the time for you to step back and let your real estate agent take the lead. You’ve discussed what you will or will not accept. This is the time to let them work on your behalf.
  • Stay Positive: It’s natural to stress a bit at this time, but remind yourself that this is only the beginning. You’re headed in a new direction, and this is the time to stay positive.

Keeping a level head during the negotiation process benefits everyone. You’re halfway there. Negotiations are just a short distance from signing the contract.
