The North Star

While the North Star was consider the most important star, it is not the brightest.

Late in the evenings when I'm walking the dog if it's a clear night I look up and see the familiar Big Dipper. The Big Dipper rotates around the North Star. If you trace a line from the outer edge of the cup of the Big Dipper you can follow it to the North Star.

The North Star, also known as Polaris, was long considered the most important star in the heavens and so many people think it would be the brightest. But it's not, in fact it's about the 49th brightest. The North Star was deemed important because it seems that all the other stars revolved around it. Once a traveler found Polaris they knew they were traveling North.

It's around this time of year that many people start to wonder just where they're heading. The resolutions made a few weeks ago have been forgotten and the old routines are taking hold again. If you have been feeling this way for the last week or so take a few moments and look up. Find the North Star and remind yourself of where you want to go in 2013. Just a few seconds reaffirming your goals will make a world of difference.
