Fresh & Easy Construction Begins at Former Video Store Space

Demolition of the former Blockbuster store is in the works to make way for the new neighborhood market coming soon.

Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Express is headed to Laguna Niguel.

On Tuesday afternoon, demolition crews were at the former Blockbuster video store at the corner of Crown Valley Parkway and Golden Lantern Street, tearing down the remaining fixtures and shelving.

According to John Morgan, senior project planner for the city's Community Development Department, residents could see the store open sometime in February 2012. Morgan said the store is one of several pilot stores testing out the "express theme." This means it is smaller than the United Kingdom-based chain's typical stores.

Fresh & Easy is only taking over 4,400 square feet of space, and the remaining portion is going to be subdivided into another retail space that has not been leased yet, Morgan said. The facade of the building will not change other than perhaps extra signs that say it's an "express store."
