Great Escape: Moms Should Head to the Movies

Hiding out in a darkened theater may have an appeal for those moms who spend the day running around. Here are seven reasons to go ASAP.

I enjoy movies, whether at home or at the theater. Movies are a great escape.

This week’s moms' recommendation is to escape to a theater in the middle of the day—by yourself. Now, some of you might not like the idea of going alone, so bring another exhausted mom with you.  She’ll appreciate the benefits, which are numerous:

  1. You can see a movie you actually want to see, instead of another Disney animation.
  2. No one else is interrupting the dialogue, because no one else is in the theater. If someone is, there is so much space you will not hear them.
  3. You can spread out.  Pretend the entire theater is your living room! Pile your jacket and purse on the seat next to you.  No one else is coming!
  4. You don’t have to share the popcorn. And you can butter and salt it to your taste. My husband loves salt.  I hate it but am willing to compromise. When I go alone, I don’t use salt, and I pile on the butter. (By the way, calories don’t count if no sees you eat them!)
  5. The beverage is all yours.  How many times do you pour yourself a drink and someone asks for a “sip”? Pretty soon it’s all gone.  Better yet, try sharing a drink at the movies.  I always find myself trying to suck up any of the remaining liquid through the ice cubes. Everyone around me hears the slurping. I get the dirty looks and “shhhh.” I am usually left parched the remainder of the film, thanks to all the salted popcorn I ate.
  6. It’s not as expensive as you may think. It’s a matinee.  The kids are at school, so you don’t have to pay a baby sitter. And if you bring a water bottle, you can still buy a small popcorn.
  7. If you decide to try this at the last minute, know this—you can walk right in.  There are absolutely no lines at the booth or at the snack counter. It’s great. You can go from your living room to your seat in 10 minutes with popcorn in hand.

The often has movies as early as 11:30 a.m., leaving you ample time to get to the elementary school pickup at 2:05 p.m. So enjoy an Oscar winner this week and relax.
