Fresh & Easy Market Releases Statement on Peanut Butter Recall

The grocery chain with a store in Laguna Niguel has issued a statement along with answers to commonly asked questions about the recent recall.

Out of an abundance of caution, Fresh & Easy stores are voluntarily recalling several nut butters (almond, cashew, peanut and tahini) marked with 'Best Before' dates from May 1, 2013 to September 24, 2013 due to potential contamination with Salmonella. "With your safety in mind, we have removed these products from our shelves. We encourage any customers who may have purchased these products to immediately stop using and discard the item, keeping just the label or store receipt to claim a full refund from the store," the chain said in a statement via the FDA.

A. If you experienced any signs of illness, please contact your doctor right away.

Q. What can you tell me about Salmonella?
A: Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
