I began covering Poway wrestling in the fall of 1984 when I was first starting out in journalism.…Read More Wayne Branstetter was one of several terrific coaches at the school at that time (Dan Schaitel, Lisa Reis, Jay Trousdale, Neville Saner, Mark Miller). One of the things that became apparent: If you want your athletes to succeed, you must have great expectations of them. That demand for excellence is something I've noticed from every successful coach who gets the most out of his athletes whether they win or lose. What Branstetter doesn't touch on in this interview is his faith and the Christian example he sets, proving to impressionable young men that the faithful can be tough—and cool—at the same time.
My best Wayne Branstetter story: Once I wanted to do a George Plimpton-type article and wrestle one of his athletes and then write about it. He nixed the idea. "These guys don't know how to take it easy," he said. "They'll break your arms. These guys will kill you."
He was probably right. My arms and dignity are still intact.
Congratulations to Coach Branstetter (and those who have influenced him and been influenced by him) for getting much-deserved recognition, maintaining a successful program that has been above reproach, and making a difference in the lives of many affected by him directly and indirectly.

We were talking here about those of us that did take the time to serve, Especially in time of war ! If you can't say something nice try to refrain from saying anything !

And how about they also fund new computers when needed, additional classes in the arts, PE teachers at the elementary grades, and offer free tutoring after school for those students whose parents would like that? That way no one else has to do anything at all. After all, we all pay too many taxes and can simply pay no more. That would be GREAT for you!

How refreshing to hear the teachers want to add more days to the school calendar and shrink class…Read More sizes. Love the 'can do' posturing. Too bad the talk is only "PR." Without additional funding from the mother ship, it won't happen.
I have an idea how to add back the days without the need for additional funding AND the teachers can keep their full current salary. The teachers can show up and teach the week they chopped off.
And I would have preferred "... the school will cost $800,000 ...", but I’m no scribe.

So why are divorced people allowed to be leaders? Seems to be that if people were really against what Jesus spoke against they would be all into making divorce and adultery illegal and banned from the scouts. If the fundamentalists were really all that "Bible fearing," they would show up everywhere with signs protesting divorce and adultery instead of abortion and gay marriage... Oh but wait; that wouldn't fit in with what THEY want..... Hmmmmmmm
