About 200 local members of the Laguna Niguel Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) donated and delivered more than 3,000 pounds of lightly used clothing to various local charities.

The 3,600-member Laguna Niguel Stake is similar to a Catholic diocese and includes the cities of Aliso Viejo, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel and Laguna Beach.

“It was a simple and meaningful thing to do” said Juliette Chesley, project organizer for the church.

Fifty members of the church transported the more than 200 bags of clothing that were hand-sorted and divided by local church members to each charity. Several Boy Scout troops chartered by the church also were assembled to sort and distribute clothing for delivery or pickup at the local Stake Center in Aliso Viejo.

This local effort was part of a larger churchwide day of service known as "Helping Hands Day." Unofficially, it was dubbed the "Community Closet" among church members who participated.
