Sponsored by the Laguna Niguel Police Services, food booths, face painting, and a petting zoo were just a few of the highlights.

“I even took off my badge so that I wouldn’t be mistaken for a sheriff as I was here, but my kids still had their badges," joked Councilman Robert Ming. "But, it was a little confusing because they had the firemen's hats on and the badges, and I think that’s like an internal conflict, isn’t it?”

Also on The Agenda

Camino Capistrano Street and Landscape Improvements:

The original estimate for the Camino Capistrano Street and Landscape Improvements Phase II Project was initially $132,000; the actual cost was $385,000. This was due to change orders that took place.

Th first change had to do with an unknown condition. Director of Public Works/City Engineer Dave Rogers explained that the original plans showed that the asphalt was approximately 8 inches in thickness, when in actuality it was 20 inches thick.  As a result, it was much more difficult to move, and created a lot more disposable material. Because the road itself was so old, it was also probably overlaid several times before, he said.

The second change resulted after the committee received the property owner of Carl’s Jr. to agree to the improvements. As a result, they were able to complete a long section of improvements that otherwise would not have occurred, thus increasing the cost.

Professional Services Agreement With Hunt Design

A Professional Services Agreement with was approved, to update the Master Sign and Way-Finding Program for the Gateway area. Hunt Design brought in various mock-ups, which the committee was impressed.  It has designed signs for other cities including Laguna Hills with great results, it said.  In addition, the bid was cost-effective.

Marine Car Wash

Council Member Ming reported that the raised more than $7,000 by washing about 200 cars.

“The city was very supportive and it was great to see the community working well with the Marines, and getting to know our adopted unit,” Ming said.

Cap and Trade

Ming will be traveling to Sacramento from Sept. 14-15, to support “Friends for Saving California Jobs.”

On the 14th, a rally will be held for the non-profit corporation, which aims to save California jobs via stopping Cap and Trade and environmental over-regulation, according to its website friendsforsavingcaliforniajobs.com.

“People are starting to wake up to the fact that Cap and Trade is here, or coming, and it will be devastating for a lot of the economy," Ming said. "People are starting to realize that this is kind of regulatory madness and hopefully, we’ll see some changes. For now, we just have lots of dust we can kick up, so that’s what we’re doing."
