Other participating agencies included: Orange County Sheriff's Dept., Mission Hospital, TIP, OCFA's Chaplains, Doctor’s Ambulance, and O'Connor Mortuary.

This event was sponsored by Friends Against Drunk Driving and is designed to teach students the dangers of drinking and driving. It followed a student throughout a drinking event, the decision to drive, a simulated car crash with real vehicles, and on-scene treatment of victims including both injured and fatal.

The event also included the arrest of the drunk driver and family notification of a death.  It is considered to be a very powerful event for all parties involved including the students in the crowd.

“This is a very important message that can save lives,” says OCFA Cap. Steve Concialdi. “We hope that students will decide not to take a drink, and definitely not drink and drive.”

During my Sophmore year of high school in the 1980's, we had a similar event put on by MADD, ASB and the Sheriff station for the Senior and Junior class the week of Prom. I was able to participate as one of the injured in the mock DUI crash, my best friend was pronounced "DOA", and another friend was airlifted out by a real helicopter. It was very gruesome and real feeling. I have never forgotten this as a participant and really feel like it helped reinforce the effects of DUI on everyone, not just yourself.

@Robin: I think this is something that all high schools should do or at least consider. Thanks for sharing.

Many years ago in Dana Point, i worked late and when driving home came upon a multi-car accident at the intersection Del Obispo and Del Avian. It had just happened and there were no police on the scene yet. There were bodies strewn in the street, teenage girls crying and screaming. A pick-up truck was on fire with a girl trying to help her boyfriend out of the truck. I parked and got him out of the truck. I remember that there was blood all over my white dress shirt. I stuck around until police and paramedics arrived. I read the next day that one of the kids (I believe both cars that initially hit were full of teenagers) died. That was so eerie. It seemed like I had stumbled upon a battle scene. Things like that stay with you. Slow Down and Focus.
