Fun Facts About The Fourth of July

Bet you didn't know that potato salad and chips are the most popular items at a Fourth of July picnic. Read on for more factoids.

Hard to believe, that it has come around so quickly, but the Fourth of July has arrived.

The American holiday that celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of the Independence on July 4, 1776, is one of the most beloved celebrations in our nation.

But there maybe some facts about the day that you didn't know:

  • Did you know that the estimated population of the United States was 2.5 million people in July of 1776? 
  • This July 4th, the estimated population of the U.S. is 313.9 million people. 
  • Five places have “America” in their names. The most populous is American Fork, Utah, with a population of 26,263.
  • Thirty-five places have “eagle” in their names. The most populous one is Eagle Pass, Texas, with a population of 26,248.
  • One place has “patriot” in its name. Patriot, Ind., has a population of 209.
  • Potato salad and potato chips are popular food items at Fourth of July barbecues. Approximately half of the nation's spuds were produced in Idaho or Washington state in 2011.
  • Six is the number of states in which the value of broiler chicken production was estimated at $1 billion or greater between December 2010 and November 2011. There is a good chance that one of these states — Georgia, Arkansas, North Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi or Texas — is the source of your barbecued chicken
