Update: Laguna Niguel SUP Rider at 50 Mile Mark 2 Days In

Originally published Sept. 16 at 4:30 p.m.

Standup paddler Will Schmidt of Laguna Niguel has traveled about 50 miles in two days as he attempts to touch the eight Channel Islands and return to shore in Dana Point for charity.

Two of those islands seem to have been cut from his route Monday afternoon as he heads south toward tiny Santa Barbara Island. We won't know why he made the detour until Schmidt lands at Santa Catalina.

Schmidt has traveled about 17 miles since 10 a.m. Monday.

He is being shadowed by the Campbell Sloop, captained by Susan Campbell.

The two are using the trek to crowdfund two charities. Campbell chose to support Casa Hogar, which benefits orphaned children in Mexico. Schmidt, a former Marine, is choosing to support the Wounded Warrior project, which helps rehabilitate veterans struggling with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Schmidt said he expects 20-knot winds at the start of the journey. Military training exercises this week at San Clemente Island may present problems, he said.
