New Laguna Niguel Lake Record—17 Pound Trout Caught This Week

A Glendora man shattered the lake record with a monster trout catch of 17 pounds, 10 ounces.

More than 23,500 pounds of rainbow trout have been stocked at Laguna Niguel Lake since Nov. 16 and new records are being set daily.

According to Rick Mendoza, co-owner of Rip 'n Lips, the company that rents fishing equipment, boats and more at the lake, Rick Morales of Glendora shattered the Lake record trout with a monster 17-pound, 10-ounce trout that was caught in Zone 2 on purple Power Bait.

David Pierson of Garden Grove caught a 12-pound, 8-ounce trout twitching a green Lip Ripperz mini jig in the flats off a boat.

Danny Mun of La Mirada caught an 11-pound, 8-ounce trout throwing a fire tiger pattern crank bait in the flats off a boat.

Robby Chor of San Pedro weighed in an 11-pound, 5-ounce trout using an orange/white power mouse in Zone off the shoreline.

Cooling temperatures have made for awesome trout fishing conditions at the lake, Mendoza reported. Trout fishing has been ‘wide open’ the first couple days after a stocking with five fish limits being caught in less than an hour.

Power Bait in any color seems to be working along with inflated night crawlers dipped in garlic scent. Bait fisherman are using short leaders with the majority of fish coming from shallow water. Orange, Chartreuse and White trout worms, jigs and crank baits working well for those throwing artificial.

Fly fisherman continue to hammer fish in the flats using bead head midges in black and red patterns. Water temp is currently 54 degrees with 6 -8’ visibility, Mendoza reported.
