Diary of a Wolverine: Volleyball Team Makes School History

Aliso Niguel senior volleyball player Greg Williams shares his journal entry for the week ending May 12.

CIF!!!!

Aliso Niguel Boys Volleyball has come down with something…. It’s called confidence.

Last Thursday, we played Trabuco Hills (7-0 in league). They had already won the league title, but that didn’t dampen our determination. Coming into that match, we had won our last two, including a win over Capo after being down 2-0 and a sweep of San Juan Hills on our Senior Night, but we never thought it would get as good as it is now.

In the Trabuco match, we dropped the first game. That was the last time we were ever behind. We won the next three games of the match, and ruined Trabuco’s perfect league season and its Senior Night.

That win got us into the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs. To put that in perspective, Aliso volleyball almost never goes to CIF, and we had never won a CIF playoff game. Ever.

On Tuesday, we drove out to face the West Valley Mustangs in lovely (that’s sarcastic) Hemet, looking to change that last fact. The ride on the team vans was a blast. There’s nothing like rolling down the windows and rocking music with the guys I had grown to love over the last few months.

West Valley had nothing on us. We crushed them 25-19, 25-10, and 25-11. At the moment I got the final kill, we had made ANHS history: We were the first volleyball team to ever win a CIF playoff game!

Now, with a four-game win streak we get a HOME CIF game tonight against San Luis Obispo. As a team, we’re overflowing with confidence and a belief in ourselves. Words really can’t describe what that does for a high school volleyball team.

While that’s been going on, I FINISHED MY AP TESTS!!!! Now, my academic school year has essentially reached completion, as all of my classes were AP classes that finish in the first two weeks of May. From here on out, it is smooth sailing through the rest of my senior year!!!

So, in case you were wondering, my life is good!!! I hope the past few weeks in your lives have all been as rewarding as mine and, if not, I hope good things come your way soon!!!

If you’re looking for something to do tonight at 7 o'clock, COME TO THE MATCH. The atmosphere is going be electric, and your Aliso Niguel boys volleyball team is not content with just winning one match, we have our eyes on the Division 2 CIF SS championship!!!

Have a great week! I’ll let you know how we do next week!!!

Greg
