Dana Hills Girls' Varsity Tennis Reach Final USTA Southern Regional Championships

After a tough loss to University in CIF-SS Semi-Finals, the Lady Dolphins take a deep breath and swim on to the finals of the CIF USTA Southern Regional Girls Championships.

The Lady Dolphins had to regroup after a tough loss to University in the semi-finals of the CIF-SS Div. 1 Semi-Finals (8-9 due to darkness and an insurmountable lead in games) and they did just that.

With the inaugural CIF USTA Southern Regional Girls Championships bringing a more impressive title than the CIF-SS Division 1 title, to the Champions of the Regional Finals, Dana Hills Coach Green stated: "Dana Hills wants to be the team to be able to say that they were the first team ever to win the regional finals, that's our goal and now that we have our full line-up I believe our chances are very good."

In the first round, the Lady Dolphins defeated Stockdale (Central Section) 7-0, with an impressive game tally of 84-3 on Tuesday.  The quarters and semi-finals both were to be played at The Claremont Club on Friday.  In the quarters, the Lady Dolphins faced Granada Hills, who had previously held a 41 match winning streak, and defeated them 7-0, (84-13 in games) and began to prepare for their semi-final match against undefeated Campbell Hall.

Coach Green stated: "Our girls have worked incredibly hard and knew what they needed to do to defeat Campbell Hall, and they went out there and did just that, I could not be more proud of them."

Campbell Hall got the first three points in No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 singles and the scoreboard was looking lopsided, but it did not stay that way for long, Dana Hills responsed with wins in all three doubles matches.

The match was tied at 3-3, the final match being played was the No. 1 singles match between Alyssa Smith (DH) and Zoe Katz (CH) on center court.  The first set was pretty even until at 5-4, Smith earned a break point, she didn't hesitate and converted with a down-the-line winner and the set.  Katz responded by raising her game and winning the second set 6-2.  Smith(committed to Duke) and Katz (committed to USC) began the third set with every team member, coach, parent, eagerly surrounding the center court.  The pressure of the match on her shoulders did not seem to hamper Smith as she dug deep and raised her level of play impressively, giving the spectators incredible tennis and a decisive third set victory of 6-1 and led her fellow Lady Dolphins to a 4-3 victory over the Campbell Hall Vikings.

The final of the Championships (Dana Hills vs. Peninsula) was due to be Saturday, but as the teams began to announce their line ups the rain began to fall and the final has been postponed until Dec. 1.
