Dolphin boys varsity tennis opened the new season with a loss to Tesoro on Tuesday.

(Editor's Note: Thanks to Sue Ludwig for sending in this story.)

The Dolphin Boys tied Tesoro High School in their first league match 9-9, which meant that games had to be counted and the final tally was Dana Hills 72 games-Tesoro 81 games, which gave Tesoro the narrow win on Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Dana Hills lost three of its starters from last season, Trevor Dell and Chris Bloom, who graduated in 2011, and Matt Le Barre, who moved to Canada. Still, Coach Justin Green is optimistic that this will be a good season for the boys.

Returning players have been working hard year-round and also welcomed freshman Alec Dardis to the team, who in the last year, has soared in the USTA rankings.

After the first round, Tesoro was up 4-2, but Dana Hills fought back in the second round winning that round 4-2 tying it up at 6-6. The Dolphins were up 9-8 with only their No. 2 doubles team of Jon Alami and Shu Funato still playing, the set was tied 5-5 and Alami/Funato were looking strong, but then Tesoro stepped their play up and few levels and won the set 7-5 and therefore, the match with a 9-game margin.
