Movie Review: 'Bully' Sends Powerful Message About Heinous Act

Lee Hirsch has directed a poignant film called Bully, that focuses on five kids and their families over the course of a school year.

Bully is not a warm and fuzzy documentary, but rather one that will pull at your heart strings. It shows the parents of suicide victims, middle school and older kids that get terrorized by others. 

I think Jason Russell's documentary about the kids in Uganda and Joseph Kony's abuse got a lot of attention. I wish that our kids living in the States would also get some attention regarding this issue. True they're not being kidnapped and put though unbelievable amounts of torture in the Kony way.  But alas, it's enough torture where kids are taking guns to school and at worst giving up, and taking their lives at barely 11 years old.

Why bully? Why torture? What makes a kid behave so cruel to another?  

I'd think someone like Bill Gates may have grown up looking like a nerd. What would have happened if he was a victim of bullying and took his life?  We miss out when we lose a life to suicide. The parents miss more.  

I encourage every parent to see this, as well as teachers and administrators in our city.  

This isn't a cute film, it is heart wrenching and needs to be seen and heard. I'd like to see it posted on every Facebook page and Twitter account. Why not? Or do we not care about it as much because the numbers are low? I think losing one kid to bullying is one too many.  There is no reason for it-ever.  If we oppose gang violence then we should oppose bullying to the highest degree.
