Today Is Presidents Day—Happy Birthday George and Abe

The kids have the day off and the banks are closed, but there's more to the holiday than that.

Today is Presidents Day.

In general, federal, state and county offices, county and city libraries, and city halls will be closed. In addition, you won’t get much banking done today and the kids have the day off. But the malls are open as are grocery stores, OCTA and Metrolink service.

With that said, Presidents Day has some history to it. According to Patroitism.org:

Until 1971, both Feb. 12 and Feb. 22 were observed as federal public holidays to honor the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (Feb.12) and George Washington (Feb. 22).

The same year, President Richard Nixon proclaimed one single federal public holiday, the Presidents' Day, to be observed on the third Monday of February, honoring all past presidents of the U.S.

Washington's birthday is the official name designated to what many of us know as President's Day

It was in 1968 that the term Presidents Day came up for legal consideration in the Congress but was shot down, though the holiday was moved to fall between the two Presidents birthdays.  In the 1980s there was a resurgence of the term with advertisers which solidified the holiday name in American culture.

Twelve states have renamed Washington’s Birthday to Presidents Day or a similar or something similar in honor of all of the U.S. presidents.  In Massachusetts the holiday focuses on honoring presidents from that state and a few other states have passed similar holidays.
