The End of Medical Marijuana in Laguna Niguel?

The City Council at its meeting Tuesday will consider a ban on marijuana dispensaries.

The fate of Laguna Niguel's medical marijuana dispensaries will be discussed during a public hearing Tuesday, April 19, at the . The council is proposing to amend all zoning districts to prohibit marijuana dispensaries. On the chopping block would be Suite A, currently the city's only pot shop. 

The City Council decided to move forward with the plans despite the please of several medical marijuana patients who spoke on behalf of Suite A and medical marijuana in general at the . After  the hearing, the council will finalize the wording of the ordinance, and it will be put to a final vote May 3. 

As it stands now, the ordinance would ban mobile dispensaries as well.  If the city decides to pass the ordinance, patients could be forced to travel to the northern part of the county in order to get their medicine.

Also planned:

  • Declaration of May 1-8 as Days of  Remembrance for victims of the Holocaust.
  • The city will be purchasing a new telephone system. The council will discuss a recommendation to accept the proposal from Blue violet/Mitel to provide and install a new citywide VoIP telephone system and data network equipment. 
  • Discussion of a proposal to spend $197,500 on new computer hardware and software as well as $105,770 for the finance department's LAN technical support account.
  • The council will consider the appointment of David Janisch as an alternate member to the investment, banking and audit committee.
