Laguna Niguel Organizations, Projects Get Federal Funds

The Community Development Block Grant allotted the city $220,740 in funds for local improvements.

The Fair Housing Council of Orange County, the Crown Valley Parkway Master Plan as well as five non-profit organizations will receive about $220,740 in grants allocated by Laguna Niguel's Community Development Block Grant.

The federal grant system is implemented at local levels to improve public areas and quality-of-life. The Laguna Niguel decided how to allocate its grant money Tuesday, with final approval set for its May 7 meeting.

“We did the analysis with how many Laguna Niguel residents would be served,” said Mayor Pro Tem Linda Lindholm. “The participating organizations answered all of our questions. All of our programs are meant to help families.”

About $33,000 will be dedicated to five non-profit organizations such as Laura’s House, Boys & Girls Club, South Orange County Outreach, Families Forward and South Coast YMCA.

“I was very happy with the mix of organizations,” said Mayor Robert Ming. “All of these providers reach directly into Laguna Niguel.”

The Fair Housing Council of Orange County will receive 20 percent of the total funding to encourage diversity. The program targets residents with low- to moderate-income families.

Last, a new restroom will be built at Crown Valley Community Park with the funds and will cost about $149,000. This is one of many improvements to be included in the Crown Valley Parkway Master Plan.
