No Escape for Dodgers of Weed Abatement

The City Council has slapped a special property tax assessment on two residents who failed to keep weeds under control on their properties.

The at Tuesday night's meeting decided to add a special assessment to the property tax bills of two residents who failed to remove excess weeds from their properties.

According to , the city passed a resolution in April requiring property owners in the area to remove weeds and dry grasses within 100 feet of a structure to avoid fire hazards and public nuisances. More than 350 property owners who failed to comply with the resolution were sent weed abatement notices in April and given 10 days to comply.

For the two residents who failed to complete the weed removal, the city had a contractor remove the weeds and billed the property owners for the work.

"If the property owner does not pay, the amount owed is added to that property owner’s property tax bill as a special assessment," Casey said.  "That’s what last night's proposed resolution authorized."

And, according to Casey, it's no small bill. One property owner was slapped with a $653 bill for clearing the property of the fire hazard. The other was charged $287.

The council also approved:

  • The disposal of surplus and obsolete equipment in preparation for the move to the   The old equipment will be recycled.
  • The closure of City Hall from Thursday, Aug. 25, at noon through Monday, Aug. 29, at noon to complete the move to the new location.

The City Council meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the  at 27841 La Paz Rd.
