City Council to Select New Mayor Tuesday Night

Members will conduct annual game of musical chairs to see who will replace current Mayor Gary Capata beginning Dec. 6.

The will be selecting a new mayor and mayor pro tem at tonight's meeting.

Council members for the city serve four-year terms and are limited to two consecutive terms.  The election of members is staggered so that at most, three council seats are up for election every two years. The council then selects two members to serve as mayor and mayor pro tem for one-year terms. and will be stepping down for their respective replacements on Dec. 6. 

The council will also be opening the floor for discussion of the new Gateway Specific Plan that was approved by the .

Tis being updated by the city in hopes of encouraging new development in the currently stagnant Gateway area, which is located between the I-5 freeway and 73 toll road. The public is invited to comment on the new zoning plans.

The City Council is set to:

  • Approve the memorandum of understanding between the Orange County Transportation Authority and the cities of Dana Point, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, Orange County and the State Department of Transportation for the Crown Valley Parkway Traffic Signal Synchronization Program. This traffic signal synchronization is designed to increase the flow of traffic on Crown Valley Parkway and reduce air pollution by reducing the amount of time spent waiting at red lights.
  • Pre-qualify the prospective bidders for the Crown Valley Parkway Widening Phase 2.
  • Accept notice of completion for Chapparosa Park slope and V-ditch repair and 10 contracts for the City Hall construction.

The City Council will also be conducting a closed session to conference with labor negotiators for the Orange County Employees Association.
