City to Honor Soldier, Decide on Red-Light Cameras, Barking Dogs in New Quarters

Top divers will also be recognized, and Cub Scouts and Brownies will be on hand to mark the first City Council meeting in the new City Hall.

Tonight's City Council meeting at Laguna Niguel’s new City Hall will begin on a festive note as Mayor Gary Capata and the council members cut a ribbon to officially open the council chambers.  The 7 p.m. meeting will be preceded by a cake and cookie reception.

The agenda includes an invocation by Pastor Randy Steele of Laguna Niguel Presbyterian Church. Junior Girl Scout Troop 1066, Brownie Troop 92 and Cub Scout Pack 774 will lead the council and public in the Pledge of Allegiance. The ceremony will be followed by a short reception.

In another first, the Laguna Niguel Military Support Committee and the council will honor Sgt. Chris Naimon, a Laguna Niguel resident who recently returned from a seven-month deployment.  As part of the city’s ongoing effort to support the troops, the panel will regularly recognize returning Laguna Niguel soldiers. Any Laguna Niguel soldier returning from active service is eligible.

The City Council will also recognize the of Laguna Niguel. The team recently competed in the AAU National Diving Championship. The 36-member team competed in 48 events winning 16 gold, 15 silver and nine bronze medals.  The team is lead by head coach Curt Wilson and assistant coaches Rich Wilson and Dave Mickie. In the eight-day competition, the team competed against 412 divers from the East and West Coast on 1-meter, 3-meter and platform dives.

  • The City Council will vote on whether to proclaim Sept. 26-30 Childhood Obesity Prevention and Fitness Week.
  • Officials will take a final vote regarding the adoption of an ordinance barring from being installed on city streets.

  • The mayor or city manager will be authorized to sign a funding agreement between Orange County Transportation Authority and the city of Laguna Niguel.

The City Council meets the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 30111 Crown Valley Pkwy.

The official will be held Oct. 15. The public is invited to attend the festivities.
