Since 1994, chickens have been contraband in the eyes of the Dana Point municipal law.

But one Capistrano Beach resident, Nancy Weagley -- egged on by supporting neighbors – is looking to change all that.

According to the website DanaPointChickens.com, chickens were originally allowed in the city of Dana Point, before cityhood in 1989 and after, until about 1994.

Weagley has rallied the troops in her neighborhood, where dozens display signs that say, “We Support Hens.” About 300 signatures were collected at the Feed Barn.

On Tuesday, the City Council directed the Planning Commission to take a look at lifting the ban on hens, according to the Orange County Register. Roosters will be out of luck.

Not all are enamored with the concept. One man called City Hall, demanded his opinion be sent on to councilmembers anonymously. He said: “Chickens have always been food, not pets.”

Yes chickens are food but they can be pets too. However, hens lay eggs, lots of delicious healthy eggs which are food and when you have beautiful, fresh eggs for the first time you'll wonder why you aren't raising "hens" too. Good thing that the city of Pleasanton, California allows up to five hens in your back yard. Not only do they produce eggs but they produce some of the best manure that makes the best compost which in turn makes the most delicious and healthy vegetables. Using the word chickens is misleading, there is a big difference between hens and roosters. Hens are quiet and just go about their business, eating, scratching and laying eggs. Roosters piss off your neighbors and make you want to butcher and BBQ them at sunrise when you are trying to sleep in.
