Person Struck by Amtrak Train

An Amtrak train struck and killed a man in his 50s in Tustin today in what police said was an apparent suicide.

The incident happened around 5:20 p.m. about 150 yards west of Harvard Avenue, north of Edinger Avenue, said Tustin police Sgt. Ryan Coe.

Police believe the victim was a transient, Coe said. His name was not disclosed.

Pacific Surfliner train 582, which operates between Los Angeles and San Diego, had just left the Santa Ana station, headed toward San Diego, when it struck the man, said Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham.

The train had 74 passengers on board and they remained on the stopped train for hours as Tustin police investigated the fatality.

The maximum train speed in that area is 79 mph, but the train was not going that fast as it was only two miles out of the Santa Ana station, Graham said.
