UPDATED: Metrolink Train Kills Man in Apparent Suicide

Rails are shut down after the accident. The identity of the victim has not been released.

A Metrolink train heading south today through Capistrano Beach struck and killed a man about 12:15 p.m. in a probable suicide, officials say.

The call to rescue personnel came in at 12:21, said Kris Concepcion of the Orange County Fire Authority. The man was dead when rescuers arrived about 10 minutes later, he said.

Jim Amormino of the Orange County Sheriff's Department said witnesses told deputies the man was standing on the tracks. The engineer saw the man, sounded the train whistle, and initiated the brakes, but the man jumped directly in front of the train, Amormino said.

The incident occurred near Beach Road, said Metrolink spokeswoman Sherita Coffelt. A haz-mat crew was on the scene shortly after the accident.

Coffelt said the train was No. 851 out of the Inland Empire headed to Oceanside.

No one on the train was injured.

The rails are closed and passengers left the train to get on buses to Oceanside shortly after 2 p.m., according to the Metrolink website.

As of 3:45 p.m., Pacific Coast Highway was closed and police were re-routing traffic along Camino Capistrano.

OC Line Train 641 will be replaced with bus service from Oceanside to Fullerton due to an earlier incident from train 851, according to a tweet from Metrolink.

Rob I'm sorry for your loss, I would just not care where I was going or how important it was, my only thought would be of sorrow for the person and his Family, A few self centered people my only think of themselves but very few, Ignore that kid that wasn't even close to the signal arms, and if one ever failed we'd know about it.

...signal arms...and if one ever failed we'd know about it...How? The remote monitors aren't linked to the police like they should be and the railroad tells OUR cops anything. What is the update here?
