Local Hit and Run Victim ID'd

Carlos Salas, 20, was killed on Friday morning in what authorities are calling a hit and run at the intersection of Marina Hills and Golden Lantern. Police are looking for the driver of a Nissan Maxima.

Carlos Salas, 20, of Laguna Niguel was killed early on Friday morning in what investigators are calling a hit and run accident at the intersection of Marina Hills and Golden Lantern.

Gail Krause, spokesperson for Orange County Sheriff's Department, said police are still searching for the driver of the car found about one quarter of a mile from the scene. Authorities said they received a call that a body was in the crosswalk of Marina Hills and Golden Lantern around 3:48 a.m. Friday.

"The car is a black 1998 Nissan Maxima that is registered to a Dana Point resident," she said. "However, we don't know if the owner is the person who was driving the car at the time. Investigators did find physical evidence on the car that coincides with what they found at the scene. It does appear to be a hit and run accident and the man was dragged before he was left."

Salas later died of injuries at a local hospital, according to Lt. Jim England of the Orange County Sheriff's Department. There was a skateboard found near the scene, he added.

Anyone with information on the crash, or the driver, is asked to contact investigators at 949-425-1860.

Sad. Earlier reports said it was very early--4 am or something & mentioned a skateboard found there. Don't know if it was the case, but I do see skateboarders crossing the street sometimes on their skateboards, of course moving faster than pedestrians. So they can move out in front of traffic faster than someone walking. I'm guessing they don't realize that it makes it harder for cars to stop. & at the hour it was reported, I'm guessing it was still dark so harder to see someone crossing the street. & sometimes people are out at night, wearing dark clothing on bicycles & probably skateboards, making it even harder to be seen. Whatever the circumstances of this, I hope they quickly find the driver. but also that any skateboarders will pause to think about this & to realize the risks of skateboarding across intersections (& also just remembered another fatal skateboarding incident w a young teen in a neighborhood & they mentioned that his stance on the skateboard had his back to the oncoming car). Again, don't know what happened in this instance, but I do often see skateboarders (& others) putting themselves in harms way, without making sure that oncoming traffic is going to stop. & I grieve for the loss of them.

Are you serious? A hit and run is a hit and run. Sounds like you are capable of the same thing. Makes me wonder about the O.C. sometimes.

I agree Scott, NO MATTER THE CIRCUMSTANCES, you don't just hit someone and take off. Seriously....what is a human life worth? I agonize over whether this poor kid was still alive initially after being struck, and had he received help earlier, might still be alive. So sad. His friends and family are in my prayers.

I'm at the site right now and spoke with his some of his friends. He was a much-loved young man. So sad for the family. Please keep them in your prayers.

Has the thoughtless, cold hearted person been found yet who did this to Carlos? Very sad indeed!

Hi Jamie: Nope, still at large.

What are the authorities saying exactly? I would think that a name would be released if they are looking for the owner and/or driver of the car...
Jamie September 19, 2012 at 02:06 AM
I agree Claudia. Something doesn't sound right here. You have a car and that is as far as it goes right now? Doesn't sound like an arrest is forthcoming any time soon.
