I can't remember the name of this dreadful movie I saw late the other night. It dealt with the person traveling to the future filled with high hopes only to find that our country was in the tank. In the movie the nation was run by dumb people, non of whom had the faintest idea of how to make things better. To illustrate a point they couldn't get seeds to grow. Why? they poured Gatorade rather then water onto the plants. Dumb, right? The people couldn't think for themselves or do anything because they had been dumbed down to the lowest possible level. Can't happen here, right?!
While at the Nutcracker in Orange last night I had to use the restroom and while there realized just how close we are coming to the same end as shown above. Image this. We no longer have to teach our children to flush the toilet. It's done for them. We don't have to tell the children to remember to turn off the water in the sink because it is turned on and off for them. Need a towel, no problem. Just wave your hand under the black box and paper dispenses automatically. Now these things won't hurt us as a nation but are they the tip of the iceberg. Please answer this for me. Why would a child ever have to learn what 2 + 2 equals? They press the numbers into their calculator and the answer appears. Why should a child have to learn how to spell the word Antartica? There is spell check on their laptop. Why should a child learn to write when the computer does it all for them by converting the spoken word into printed text? Why learn to read when you can just put a CD or DVD into the player and the recorded book is read to you? Why go to school at all?
Now, in the movie the dumb people (the citizens) didn't have to work because the government provided everything for them. That included processed food, drink, drugs, medical care and entertainment. Now that I think about it maybe it wasn't just a dumb movie after all. Maybe it was a message some Hollywood outsider was trying to send to all of us explaining where we are heading as a people. The good thing about lowering the expectations of our people is it is hard to be disappointed with the outcome. Disappointing, isn't it!!
