BLOG: A Lesson in Irony

Yes, our government in action

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is actually proud of the fact it is distributing the greatest amount of free meals and food stamps ever.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of
the Interior, asks us to: "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their
stated reason for the policy is because the animals will grow dependent on
handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves.

This ends today's lesson.

Anything can be made to appear ironic if apples are compared to oranges.

True, but you will sit there and say that is not ironic that our government proudly shows people new and easier ways to obtain food stamps and at thje same time cautions against feeding wild animals because it will make them dependent on handouts. Come on!

Yes, indeed, if you give people food and food stamps it will supress their natural hunting abilities. After all, a citizen should be able to live comfortably by stalking the plentiful supply of rats and pigeons.

With the huge amount of money given in tax breaks to the wealthy we should have a waterfall economy. Instead we have a dried up levy instead. Keep giving those billions in subsidies to BIg Oil.Big corporations , War mongers , etc .. They are so in need of it. HA! When the Bush Tax Cuts for the Wealthy went into affect 10 years ago they were supposed to boost the economy and generate jobs. So there it is America, We are now living in the Republican version of Utopia! Corporate profits are up!..CEO pay is up! and your wages are down!..if you're lucky enough to actually be receiving wages at this point. Let me see if I understand...Conservatives are all against abortion and family planning so that means more unwanted children but they do not want to feed those that are already here? Makes sense. It was your flawed economic policies that created the mess we are in ...Trickle Down Economy ??? It has not work or has it ? It trickled to the Cayman Island and Swiss Bank Accounts instead . Republicans contradict everything they do or say. They are truly lost in their own greedy whirlwind. In a perfect world, it wouldn't be the government's job to provide benefits like health insurance, pensions, housing or food assistance. But no such place exists this side of heaven. Even in the best of economic times, our society will have the poor, the hungry and the homeless.

Indeed, Paul. I agree wholeheartedly. You see, the wild animals won't forage, and steal from one another, using deadly force in some instances, if they are placated by the handouts of visitors. I'm all for the forceful taking of resources from the advantaged if they are too weak to defend themselves. It's nature's law, after all, that the fittest survive, and those who benefit greatly from temporary market fluctuations or collusion really do deserve to have their homes raided by those who are left worse off by their actions. This is especially so when the poor have no resources or jobs from which to derive them. We should suspend all the laws that keep people dependent on the government, especially the tax-hungry police forces that protect these weak, but resource-rich individuals. You wouldn't want them to grow dependent, would you?

As was famously observed, "patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel." These days it seems to be the reflexive first. Charles has aptly pointed out the fallacy in your post and your reply to him hardly corrects that. You should be more concerned that circumstances are such that an increasing number of people are in need of food assistance, and thankful that there is a mechanism for alleviating the problem. Wildlife ecosystems are not the same as social ecosystems and what is sauce for the goose is not for the gander in this case. But you know that.

Interesting perspective.

I love this!

No, People should learn to be 2nd and 3rd generation welfare recipients and not work hard to get ahead. They should learn to avoid an education at all costs. Make sure they don't get hit with a job or worse yet apply for one. Hey, better to learn how to follow then to lead. Right? Should a government make it easier to get a job or to go onto welfare and to get food stamps? Should it punish achievers and reward slackers? And please don't waste time saying not all unfortunate people are slackers. We all know that is true but that's not who we're talking about. The good thing is you get to vote for whichever way you prefer this country to proceed.
Paul Herzbrun September 20, 2012 at 03:33 PM
Yep, that's it. The big oil subsidies have created the problem. Thanks for solving the problems of the country. As for the war mongers we have to get those people lit Hillary and all the democrats that voted for the conflict in Irag to help save the world from weapons of mass distruction. You are right Republicans are against government paid abortions. Oh wait that isn't what you said is it? But you knew that didn't you? I always thought family planning called for having as many or as few kids as you could afford and not the killing of unborn and those that survive abortion attempts. But tell me what does any of this have to do with the irony? yes there will always be poor. I just hope that there will always be rich as well to help create jobs and spend money so those of us not rich can get ahead.
