RE:  Boycott Pacsun for its disgusting portrayal of Jesus as an “Original Gangster”

Dear Mr. Schoenfeld and Ms. Lee:

Recently, I had the unfortunate experience of shopping in one of your local retail stores.  I replaced the armful of clothing I was going to buy for my daughter when I happened upon Pacsun’s anti-Christian bigotry in the form of a t-shirt calling Jesus an “Original Gangster”.  On March 2, 2014, I contacted your Customer Service via email about the t-shirt you seem to think appropriate to sell both online and in your retail stores (attached, from your website).  I’ve had no response.

This t-shirt is an ugly parody of an iconic picture of Jesus, except its creator has put Him in sunglasses and has Him using gangster hand gestures.  The caption under this picture is “Original Gangster”. A “gangster” is a “thug, villain, and hoodlum” among other things. Many for whom Jesus is not a gangster but, rather, a great prophet and even the Son of God find this depiction not simply tasteless and offensive, but grossly insulting.  Even more shocking is your company’s utterly repulsive insensitivity to a very large majority of people shopping in your stores:  Christians.

Can you imagine yourselves marketing the same t-shirt with, for example, a picture of Mohammed, an Orthodox Jewish rabbi, or the first black President?  I think not.  Yet Christians are fair game?  I have a gangster imperative for you on the tip of my tongue…..

I have and will continue to circulate this letter to urge my friends, relatives and associates to boycott your store.  If you think it wise to degrade Jesus and insult His followers, then you will reap the consequences for the only thing that matters to folks like you:  the bottom line.

Very truly yours,

Lake Forest, IL  60045

This sort of thing is so NOT useful....600 dollars can do so much good for people.....kids, stop hunger, help needy....even save CATS and DOGS.....I dunno...this seems like a really wasteful way to help the world....I'm pretty sure her 18 year old son has seen breasts before, I went and looked at the t-shirts in question....that weren't that 'naughty'........http://www.sfgate.com/technology/businessinsider/article/Outraged-Mom-Buys-Out-All-Of-PacSun-s-Offensive-5248209.php

@entropyhed: Yea, I know. It just occurs to me how such a loud voice, so much of that energy could be used to be helpful and create something instead of trying to "take out" or get "a shirt removed" from a major MAJOR company.... PACSUN has such a long list of umbrella companies and affiliates, all of which are geared toward young teen/ adult surf/skate cool demographic I find it so odd that this is going foster any great change...Sure, it might get some short term ''rumble rumble grumble outrage outrage WHY I NEVER!!!'' but it isn't useful or helpful, even to their OWN goal. They could have countered with a: "Jesus loved gangsters, too..." "EVEN gangsters are loved in Christ" shirt, or how about "Jesus hung out with gangsters, he isn't afraid of you" Or SOMETHING. O well..../scratches head.... Peace, my brother.

Some may think this is a little thing some may put more emphasis on it than it deserves. Jen has every right to not buy from pac-sun and quite frankly I happen to agree with her on that. Not sure I would spend much more thought on it than that. The fact is, the world is going to do what the world wants to do. As a Christian, I have to live in the world but I don't have to be of the world. What people, Christians and non believers need to seriously consider; the God of the Bible doesn't take lightly to those that blaspheme His name. To blaspheme is to speak with contempt about God or to be defiantly irreverent. I would guess this T-shirt would fall into that category. Read what God did in Isaiah 36 to those that where blaspheming His name, "Then the angel of the LORD went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp." Some may think....well I don't believe in your God so it doesn't affect me. It really doesn't matter what you believe in, but only what is true. Me not believing in gravity wouldn't help me if I jumped out the back of an airplane. My point is, God will hold accountable those that misuse His Holy Name...and that counts for "Oh my G-d" which you hear all day long. Thankfully He is slow to anger and doesn't want any to perish but come to repentance. I for one would not want to be wearing that shirt when I step before Him on judgement day. By the way, there won't be any pleading on that day, it is just a sentencing trial. Jesus suffered, and died for those that repent and put their trust in Him. And He rose again, defeating death. He paid your fine, it's a free gift but you have to receive it first. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16 Peace!

Hey Fort- I originally deleted some of my way TL;DR (too long didn't read) posts to save the eyes of this thread...some of the longer ones were between you and I mostly...sometimes after a thread has been going on for awhile I will go back and delete any wordy stuff I contributed. AFTER I deleted my verbose comments I noticed that this story had been posted multiple times in other places; and that the poster never really came back to THIS thread. I can comprehend perhaps wanting to get a different response, it just seems weird/odd to me as a position for a person who says they love Christ to do this, in this way. I would have thought it would be very effective AND send a welcoming message to do something else with the energy. Among just our group of friends and spreading it out word of mouth, as a an idea brought on by the "buy ALL the offensive t-shirts lady for 600 dollars" a collection has started up to send $$$ to Ronald McDonald House and St.Jude's.....We like to pay off peoples lay-a-ways- before the holidays and surprise service staff with huge anonymous tips, so we will sorta fold this new collection into that....We have FUN doing this, and some of the reactions are very funny and awesome...(never been found out except once and it had a cool chain reaction effect) Instead of "outrage at THIS, war against THEM and fight against THAT" we have found over the years that a message of "I get you brother/sister, been there too" and some kindness and humor go a long way to ending suffering.
