California's Good Samaritan Law Now In Effect

Believe it or not, like it or not, we have a tremendous drug abuse problem here in Laguna Niguel, as well as throughout South Orange County.

DON’T RUN, CALL 9-1-1

At midnight, California’s Good Samaritan Law went into effect.  This was signed into law in September by Gov. Brown and will, without question, save lives.

Believe it or not, like it or not, we have a tremendous   Young men and women are playing with fire by using prescription drugs such as Xanax, OxyContin, Opana, Soma, Klonapin, and more – recreationally.  These drugs are like a breath.  You take one – you need another and the switch to heroin is fast due to the fact that heroin produces the same high for a fraction of the cost.   Yes OC, we have a problem.

Unfortunately it goes way beyond the OC.  It’s epidemic in every city, county and state in the United States.

The Good Samaritan Law will allow for a call for help (9-1-1) for those overdosing from drugs or having issues from alcohol consumption – without fear of arrest or prosecution.  A Good Samaritan Law in the state of NY was responsible for saving the life of rocker Jon Bon Jovi’s daughter.  The law does not condone bad behavior.  It gets help to those that need it.

Orange County has lost many amazing young men and women caught up in the quick addictive claws of prescription drugs.

Jim Kennedy’s son Joey was left on the side of the road by his freaked out friends when he started to overdose.  Drive down Camino Capistrano/Junipero Sierra and look to the freeway side.  You will see a decorated NO DUMPING sign and that is precisely where they left Joey’s body.  They did make calls to 9-1-1, but when the operator asked if they would be there, they panicked and hung up.  At that time the 911 operator chose not to send out first responders on a “wild goose chase”.

Vernon Porter’s, daughter Vanessa, was left in a bedroom, where they turned off her cell phone, and attended to her 13 hours later, after the party was cleaned up and everyone left.

Every 19 minutes we lose someone to a drug overdose.

Drugged Driving has surpassed Drunk Driving for the first time in history.  Drugged driving could be as simple as that “Mommy Xanax” and a sip of wine needed for that tremendously stressful day, or driving under the influence of a little “weed”, or drugs that you actually need to take for medical issues.

So please share this information, because you never know who is dealing with an addicted loved one.  I received a message recently that a Coto mother watched her son walk out the door on Christmas Eve and she was fearing for his life.  He had already been in rehab and she was praying that he was still alive and would come home to get help.

These are good kids making bad choices and the addiction hits them fast and hard.

We are doing many free screenings of Behind the Orange Curtain to help get the word out about this problem and give resources for help.  You are not alone in this fight.
