Salute to Veterans! - Margot Ferron

The City of Mission Viejo will recognize veterans on Veterans Day, Mon., Nov. 11 at 2 pm at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way, MV 92691.

The U.S. Marine Corps Headquarters Battalion First Marine Division will provide the Color Guard, rifle salute and taps.  In addition, Colonel Joseph Russell will be the keynote speaker.  Mission Viejo has adopted this Headquarters Battalion First Marine Division.

Musical entertainment will be performed by Dawn Wright, the “famed voice” of the Los Angeles Angels and the Anaheim Ducks along with the Southern California Children’s Advanced Chorus.

Residents Yvonne Carson and Pat Rizco will be recognized as Female and Male Veterans of 2013.  The City honor is designed to recognize those who served our country and continue to serve the community.

During WWII, Yvonne Carson served in the Women’s Corps.  Carson received her basic training in Des Moines, Iowa.  She spent time at the Intelligence Service deciphering messages received in code.  She volunteers with the Palmia Veterans Club.   Carson moved to Mission Viejo in 1991.

Pat Rizo served in the Air Force from 1952 to 1973 where he was assigned to many bases throughtout the world.  Rizco has received five, Air Force commendations and the Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam.   A few of his volunteer efforts include currently serving as the Vice President of Lion’s Club International, is member of Palmia Veterans Club, involved with Wounded Warriors and is an usher at Saddleback Church.
