National Mammogram Day. Check Your Boobies. – Margot Ferron

No one wants to be crushed, pinched, poked, prodded, smashed, flattened, squashed, but for women being proactive when it comes to getting regular mammograms, it is important.

More than likely you know October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the third Friday of the month is National Mammogram Day which is Oct. 18, 2013.

Women aged 40 and older are encouraged to get an annual mammogram. Early breast cancer detection gives physicians optimal treatments and increases your risk of survival.

Once a month women age 20 and older can conduct a self-breast exam.   The best time to do this is at the beginning of your period or when your breasts are less lumpy and less tender.    If you are no longer having periods, check at the same time each month.   You are looking for signs that your breasts may have changed.

Women with a family history of breast cancer or who have the BRCA gene may begin mammogram screening before age 40 and should always consult with their physician.
