FOOD REVIEW: The Point Restaurant and Bar for Hungry Sports Fans

With lots of big screen televisions, its cozy, fun atmosphere, and creative, tasty menu, The Point Restaurant and Bar is a great spot to catch a meal and the game.

Just in time for the World Series, we discovered a great place to eat and watch the games. The Point Restaurant and Bar located at 34085 Pacific Coast Hwy., is designed for the hungry sports fan. There are big screen televisions facing every angle. The interior is cozy with used brick walls, a bar area and dining area with lots of seating and glossy wood tables.

We sat in a booth with the perfect view of the game.  There is a casual, warm and relaxed feeling to the place. Diners, bar patrons and some of the staff were cheering loudly for their teams, which made it all the more fun.

The Point offers Happy Hour daily from 3 to 7 p.m. It was not clear to me what the drink specials were during Happy Hour, but there is a great menu of fun appetizers. The Point offers bacon aioli sliders served on Hawaiian rolls along with a side of onion haystack. There are Buffalo wings and you can choose whether you want Thai, BBQ or hot. There are also Buffalo shrimp, which are tempura battered and coated with the Point’s signature hot wing sauce. In addition, there are Filipino style spring rolls, sidewalk tacos, fish tacos, carne asada nachos, jalapeno poppers and cheeseburger pizza.

The regular menu includes several additional appetizers, such as steamed clams, ceviche, and seared ahi. There are entree salads, such as BBQ chicken, Chinese chicken, seared ahi, as well as the wedge and the Doheny organic salad.

Sandwiches include a fry bread pastrami, and a grilled Ahi along with a rainbow of burgers, ranging from a garden burger, chicken burger, and salmon burger, to several more traditional choices. There are lots of brick oven pizza options. There is a section of pastas, such as Thai chicken pasta, linguini and clams, and Cajun Jambalaya on fettuccine. Finally, The Point specialties include prime flat iron steak, miso salmon, fish and chips, and chicken fried chicken. All of these are served with mashed potatoes and broccoli with cheddar.

For kids 14 and under The Point offers mac and cheese, kid's sliders, chicken fingers, corn dogs and mini cheese pizzas. According to its web site, kids eat free Tuesday to Thursday 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with every adult meal, and kids who come in on Saturdays in their soccer uniforms after their games, also eat free.

Beer seemed like the appropriate beverage in such a sports bar atmosphere. They have some interesting choices on tap and by the bottle. At the recommendation of our waiter, Jim, we selected the Alesmith Nautical Nut Brown and I went with a Stella Artois. My husband decided to take advantage of the Happy Hour menu and picked the Buffalo shrimp, the Filipino spring rolls and three sliders. I selected the red beer onion soup served in a bread bowl.

Our beer arrived quickly, and soon after, our food was served, too. The Buffalo shrimp were large, delicious and definitely a little spicy. The spring rolls were slender and wrapped in tender dough, and served with a sweet/tasty sauce. The sliders were fabulous and the onion haystack was a little addictive. My beer onion soup was great. It was covered with melted cheese and underneath it was hearty, with lots of onions and a delightful sweet flavor. I was a little chilly and asked for a cup of coffee. Since, I was the only coffee drinker, they brewed a pot just for me, and it was quite good.

We enjoyed our visit to The Point Restaurant and Bar. It really is the perfect spot to watch a sports event. The menu is creative, the food good and the service,  efficient and friendly.

I give The Point Restaurant 3 ¾ Patches out of 5.
