FOOD REVIEW: Fuji Grill an Alternative to Fast-Food

Fuji Grill offer rice bowls, sushi bowls, salads and sushi rolls all freshly prepared in Laguna Niguel.

A hectic week led us to fast food this week, but we tried to keep it healthy by going to Fuji Grill. This tiny restaurant is located at the corner of Crown Valley and Niguel. Inside there is a mix of industrial modern décor with an interesting use of sculptured metal and an array of posters featuring various menu items.

The main menu is found behind the walk-up counter. The first section offers rice bowls. These are served over a generous portion of rice, with edamame and most can be ordered with or without veggies. Options include chicken teriyaki, grilled salmon, Tokyo steak, veggie, and BBQ eel. There is also the super bowl, which is a mix of teriyaki chicken, steak and shrimp tempura. New rice bowls, which have recently been added to the menu, are the B-bap bowl, and the Hoka Hoka. The B-bap is a Korean-style version and includes chicken, with veggies and eggs, along with a special spicy sauce. The Hoka Hoka is a new take on teriyaki chicken.

The next section features a variety of sushi bowls, which are served over rice with edamame, ginger and wasabi. The California bowl has imitation crab salad. The dynamite bowl is made with spicy tuna. The ET bowl has eel and spicy tuna. There is also a baked scallop bowl, and the Alaskan bowl, which is made with salmon sushi, among others.

Salad bowls are all served over lettuce. Fuji offers a seaweed salad, chicken salad, spicy tuna, chicken seaweed salad, and tuna tataki salad.

In addition to all of the bowls, customers can order sushi rolls. They offer rainbow rolls, the Washington roll, which is a California roll with salmon on top, and the red dragon, which is a spicy tuna roll topped with eel. The cherry blossom roll is a spicy tuna roll with tuna, and the volcano is a California roll with a baked scallop.

We were there for just a quick lunch. I ordered my favorite, the Alaska sushi bowl, and my husband chose the rainbow roll. As always, the food was ready quickly. Although there are a few small tables, we usually order Fuji Grill to go.

The food was well packed and made the trip home in good shape. The Alaska bowl was garnished with sliced green onions and sesame seeds and was delicious. This was our first time ordering a sushi roll. It was attractive and was topped with shrimp, avocado and tuna. The sushi was tasty. The fish on top was not as tender as I had hoped, but overall the roll was good.

We have been going to Fuji Grill for years, and have always enjoyed it. We appreciate the abundance of vegetables in many of their dishes, their quick service and tasty food.  It is a nice choice when you are in a hurry, but don’t feel like a burger and fries. Fuji Grill is open for lunch and dinner Monday thru Saturday and is closed on Sundays.
