What's Open and Closed on Columbus Day

Columbus Day is a federal holiday, but clearly, it's not one of the biggies.

The second Monday in October marks the Columbus Day holiday when Americans commemorate the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus. Of course, we would be remiss if we failed to point out people already inhabited the New World prior to Columbus' arrival in 1492.

Nevertheless, it's a reason for the government to take the day off.

According to the History Channel website, "[Columbus] intended to chart a western sea route to China, India and the fabled gold and spice islands of Asia; instead, he landed in the Bahamas, becoming the first European to explore the Americas since the Vikings set up colonies in Greenland and Newfoundland during the 10th century."
