$23K Laguna Niguel Wedding Ring Accidentally Sold for $10 Returned to Owner

ORANGE COUNTY, CA -- Almost two weeks after a California man accidentally sold his wife’s $23,000 wedding ring at a garage sale, it was returned to its rightful owner Thursday, Good Morning America reported.

Racquel Cloutier’s ring went missing on June 1, after she hid it in an empty box and then headed to the hospital to give birth to her fifth child, Patch reported earlier this week. Later that day, her husband, Eric Cloutier, accidentally sold the box at a yard sale for $10 (not for $5, as reported by Good Morning America).

The buyer gave the box to her daughter and son-in-law, Andrew and Alyssa Lossau, who later heard Racquel Cloutier’s plea to the media for the ring’s return. The two couples met on Thursday, and Racquel Cloutier was reunited with her ring.

"I don't think I'll be taking it off anytime soon,” she told Good Morning America. "You just can't ask for a better ending to a story.”

The Cloutiers plan to reward the Lossaus by making a donation to their favorite charity.

Let me get this straight: His wife was having a baby at the hospital and the husband was having a garage sale? Really?

And the husband is still alive, why?

Personally, I would NOT want to be married to any man who is that STUPID! First of all, what was he doing in his wife's closet? Secondly, why didn't he open the watch box? Third, how could he not recognize his own wife's wedding ring. Didn't he pick it out for her? What an idiot!!!

Good Lord ... all's well that ends well! Give the poor man a break!

Maryanne, Wow, you are so hateful! Don't think you have any worries about being married to "a man like that" or, any man! Have you ever made a mistake in your life? Well, the guy in the story made one, you see, he is only HUMAN!

I can totally see this happening. I could not wear my wedding rings for the last trimester of my pregnancies due to swelling in my fingers. I used to keep all of my best jewelry on a cigar box under some old handkerchiefs. If we had a huge yard sale planned (we used to have multifamily sales on our block) and my baby came early, I would sure have appreciated it if DH brought out the boxes of things I'd been planning to sell. But knowing MY DH, who is wonderful, by the way, I can totally see him saying, "Why is she selling THAT?" and putting it back in the closet and selling some other "treasure" that he has no clue about! Truth be told, MY husband would not be able to pick out MY engagement ring in a line-up, even though he bought it for me as a surprise so he definitely picked it out himself, and the design of the stones is quite distinctive.

Stupid, why is he having a garage sale when his wife is having a baby???? I also think they could have given a better reward.

The donation to a favorite charity may be what the couple who returned the ring asked them to do. If the couple who lost the ring was adamant about a reward, that was a way to satisfy both couples. The couple who found the ring are to be commended even more for refusing a direct reward and redirecting it to a charity.

I would have bet this was a scam when I first saw it. Who hides 23K just in a box, what husband is having a yard sale while his wife is in labor? Still seems too unbelievable.

WOW! Blackmail to make a donation to a favorite charity!?!?

Um hello people, the man and his wife might have already talked about what might happen if she goes into labor the same time the yard/ garage sale is going on, and from what it sounds like she should know what shes doing as this is her 5'th child, oh and why would a woman not want to be married to this guy as it seems he is doing something right that he is able to supply for his wife and now 5 children. People give it a rest and think before you comment...

So did anyone stop to think that maybe she had the baby and the garage sale was the next day while she was in the hospital? Maybe she told him to go home for the garage sale...she obviously had it handled in the hospital with the baby.

I'd like to see some jeweler log in, look at the picture of the ring, and give an estimate of what it's actually worth $23,000.00 ?

At my next yard sale, I would have to sell my husband for $10

@ Maryanne Terpstra: There generally is no 'wife's closet,' it's most likely shared, as everything should be.
