5 Important Questions Buyers Should Ask Themselves

Finding the home you love and having it inspected is just the beginning. To remain happy with your home purchase, you have to have done your homework so there are no surprises down the line after you have moved into your new home.

Here are 5 important questions to ask yourself when shopping for a home. You don’t want to ignore any of these, as they can mean frustration down the line for you.

Is the neighborhood noisy? A good rule of thumb when considering a home is to check out the neighborhood at various times of the day and on different days of the week – weekdays versus weekends. Is the home near an airport, or is it near an ambulance or fire truck route? This could make a big difference when it comes to noise.

Is it up to code? Consider whether the previous owners got permits when doing remodeling work. If not, it will become your responsibility after you purchase it.

What school or library and college district is it in? Your homes resale value can be impacted by a school district’s boundaries. In-district library cards will be free, but they may come with steeper taxes.

Are there any easements? Easements or encroachments can turn a friendly neighborhood upside down. Therefore, it’s always best to check for easements that allow others to use your property beforehand.

City and county rules? Check any homeowner association rules before you sign the line or make an offer. A company logo on your vehicle may not be permissible by their rules. In truth, some simple regulations may affect you down the line.

Some things are negotiable, and I can work with my buyers in these areas. But, when they’re not negotiable, as in the five areas above, to be forewarned is to be forearmed. I’m always happy to discuss these possibilities with my buyers.
