MOVIE REVIEW: 'The Oranges'

When two close families are shaken by a love affair, their lives are never again the same.

Although The Oranges, is jam-packed with well known faces from Hollywood, it isn't as much of a big hit as one would expect. That being said, the movie itself is good. However, its also very different.

Set in West Orange, NJ, the film centers around two families that have been extremely close for years. The Walling and Ostroff families live right across the street from one another, and they are all best friends.

The Ostroff family is tested when Nina (Leighton Meester), the problematic Ostroff daughter, returns home after being away for 5 years, traveling and exploring everything the world outside of New Jersey has to offer.

The plot unravels as we find out that neither couple is happy in their relationship and living in the suburbs pretending to be perfect, is simply masking the unhappiness behind closed doors.

Nina and the patriarch of the Walling Family (Hugh Laurie) begin a love affair after they both discover just how happy they finally are when they are together. Sadly the happiness doesn't last for long and soon turns to craziness among other things, when Nina's aggressively nosey mother finds out about the relationship and all hell breaks loose amongst the two families.

The film takes numerous unexpected twists, and has a series of scenes that leave the audience feeling awkward and rather confused at times. It's clear director Julian Farino is trying to convey the notion of finding happiness no matter its form, staying true to yourself and forgiveness. However, the way in which the film portrays it is definitely a little on the weird side.

As I said previously, there are a number of good actors in the film which help with the odd story line. It wasn't painful to sit through, but it definitely left me scratching my head at some of the random and obscure moments.

With a few instances of hilarity, the general humor carries through the film and lends a hand to some of the more lighter topics in the plot. Overall, not a bad movie, but rushing to see it isn't really necessary.

I give it 2.5 out of 5 Patches.
