McDonald's Tests Build-Your-Own Burgers in Laguna Niguel

Laguna Niguel became the testing ground for a new food concept at McDonald's this week.

Build-your-own burgers was launched at 30305 Golden Lantern on Monday. The Laguna Niguel location became the second location in the United States to offer the BYOB option, following Romeoville, Ill, according to a company statement.

The location was recently remodeled with orange, brown and green modern interior design. Along with the redesign, two iPad displays are now mounted on a wall opposite the cash registers, allowing customers to customize their burgers.

Here are the customization options:

  • single or double patty
  • bacon
  • bakery style bun or artisan roll
  • sharp white cheddar, American or pepper jack cheese
  • Toppings: guacamole, jalapeños, mushrooms, red onions, grilled onions, chili lime tortilla strips, sliced tomato, lettuce and pickles
  • Sauces: Big Mac special sauce, spicy mayo, creamy garlic sauce, sweet BBQ, mayonnaise, ketchup and mustard
In addition, McDonald's is trying out three new burgers (also customizable):

  • SoCal Style: white cheddar, guacamole, tortilla strips, tomato, lettuce, garlic sauce on a bakery style bun
  • Hot All Over: Pepper jack, jalapeños, tomato, lettuce, spicy mayo on an artisan roll
  • Grill Thriller: Bacon, white cheddar, grilled onions, mushrooms, sweet BBQ sauce on an artisan roll
The sandwiches cost $5.99 each. Bacon adds a dollar, as does a second patty.

The company says it's too soon to say whether these concepts will be rolled out nationally.
