Laguna Niguel Post Office Open Sunday For Sending Last Minute Gifts

If you have not sent your holiday gifts yet, the local post office is ready and willing to help this weekend.

If you've been procrastinating about sending gifts, don't despair the  in Laguna Niguel is open Sunday Dec., 18., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The local post office employs just under 100, and of those, 62 are mail carriers, the remainder are managers and clerks.

Mail, which includes letters, magazines and packages, increases three times the regular delivery numbers during the month of December, said mail carrier Van Singletary, also known as ."

He said on average during the week before Christmas the number of items delivered ranges between 5,000-6,000.

"Compared to a standard month, which is July through September, the numbers are between 1,000 and 1,500, so during the holiday we see a significant jump,"he said.

Like many locations across the country, the local post office has seen a decline in overall numbers in the past few years due to the competition which includes the Internet, he said.

Another local mail carrier, Tom Berney added, "the parcels have been heavier this year, but overall mail volume has decreased, like everyone else we're waiting for the economy to improve."

If you want to make sure that all of your holiday mail and packages are delivered by Dec. 25, here are the cut-off dates:

•Parcel Post Ground: Dec. 15

•First Class Mail: Dec. 20

•Priority Mail: Dec. 21

•Express Mail: Dec. 22
