Frugal Family: This Week's Deals

Check out the area markets for all kinds of gluten-free items, including baking mixes and hot cereals.

This week's Frugal Family focuses on the needs of consumers who require a gluten-free diet. 

 1.  Gelson’s     

Deal: This month, as it has done in past years, Gelson’s is partnering with the Celiac Disease Foundation to raise awareness of the disease. Look for pamphlets in the store that explain celiac, and see the in-store displays highlighting gluten-free products. Some newer products that are available include Bob’s Red Mill Mighty Tasty hot cereal, $2.99; gluten-free Cafe Soups, $2.49; Bob’s gluten-free rolled oats, $5.99; Barney butter almond butter, $4.99;  Bacio gluten-free 8-inch pizza, $3.99; Kettle Cuisine gluten-free frozen soup, $3.69; and seven selections from Enjoy Life, including gluten-free cookies, $2.99; Perky’s cereal, $2.49; granola, $3.99, chewy bars, $2.99; chocolate chips, $2.99; Choco Boom Bar, 4/$5.00; and nut-free mix, $2.99.

Prices are good through March 2. Many other gluten-free items are available throughout the store. Shelf  labels designate gluten-free items.

Deal: A newly incorporated portion of the frozen section is dedicated to gluten-free items, including gluten-freed burritos, $3.49; Glutino individual pizza, $6.49; Ian’s chicken nuggets; and Kettle Cuisine Soups. There is a kiosk in the cereal aisle dedicated to gluten-free products, including Glutino crackers, cereals and cookies, as well as gluten-free pantry mixes for cake, bread, pizza crust and brownies.

Product availability is ongoing. There are many other gluten-free items available in this store, which is unusual for a mainstream store. Look for the icons on the shelf designating gluten-free products.

Deal: Glutino gluten-free pizza, $3.99; Ian’s gluten-free chicken fingers, $3.99; Van’s gluten-free waffles, 2/$5.00; Kozy Shack gluten-free pudding, 2/$6.00; Lara Bar fruit and nut bars, 4/$5.00.

Prices are good through March 9. There are many other gluten-free products available. Look for the shelf tags that designate gluten-free items.
