What Does Your Favorite Valentine’s Chocolate Say About You?

You might be surprised to learn what each chocolate type means.

Valentine's Day and week are difficult. Having been a counselor for so many years, I've seen that they are very hard for some people.  Some suffer because they are alone. Some suffer because their mate does not treat them right. And so on.

It is difficult to take that pain away from those who see others' joy in front of them. In my sessions, demos and workshops, I offer the spiritual and the practical, but my clients know I am funny and tongue-in-cheek too. There are times to laugh and be light.

This is one of those times.

The history of Valentine’s Day has many legends. Some say it began with the story of a priest leaving a sweet note to a young girl signed "to my Valentine" before his untimely death.

Though the truth of Valentine’s Day’s origins may be obscure, Feb. 14 features a variety of romantic rituals. Cards, poems, flowers and jewelry are among the tokens of affection given out to loved ones and friends on that special day. Giving a gift of a box of chocolates is also a favorite tradition.

There are many types of chocolate to choose from. Generally, all chocolate must contain some form of cocoa processed from nuts of the theobroma cacao tree. Ironically, "theobroma" means "food of the gods," which we can agree describes the delightful concoction that is chocolate.

In the 16th century, Spanish monks made the first chocolate for European consumption from cocoa beans brought over from South America.

Most of us have sampled a box of chocolates and found ourselves enjoying certain pieces and tossing others after the first bite.

What do our preferences say about us?

White Chocolate

People who choose white chocolate are romantic, intense and eclectic. Courtship, romantic movies and cuddling are important. They will share their milkshake—or in Southern California style, their smoothie. Think of the old Lady and the Tramp movie and the "spaghetti kiss." Give them: A love letter or something romantic. Consider: They are sensitive and have an intuitive nature. On the plus side: They can create a soothing environment when in balance.

Milk Chocolate

Those who like this indulgent treat are sensual, cheery and entertaining. As they appreciate the tactile, their hugs and physicality can be off the chart. They enjoy all types of music and love to escape to idyllic getaways. Give them: A scrumptious dinner or spa visit. Consider: They can be busy people and get overloaded. On the plus side: They are usually warm and compassionate.

Dark Chocolate

These people are discriminating and analytical. They are always thinking and like to read and discover new things. They have the ability to sort through details. They have a deep romantic side that may be hidden. Give them: Something unique or jewelry. Consider: They will seek to understand you. On the plus side: They can be very loyal.

Truffles and Fruit-Filled

Those who love crème- or fruit-filled treats are open and earthy, with a quirky, fun sense of humor. They see possibilities and seem to draw people to them. Give them: A heart-felt gift. Consider: They can make life exciting. On the plus side: Great for creating abundance and success when in tune.

Chocolate with Nuts

Those who like chocolate with nuts are individualistic seekers with drive. They have big hearts and like action. Give them: A trip or activity to do together. Consider: Their love of life and sense of discovery. On the plus side: They can have a lot of energy and a need to be on the move.
