Middle Schoolers Win 'Music in the Parks' Competition

Niguel Hills Middle School orchestra sweeps major awards at the annual San Diego event.

string orchestra blew away its competitors at the Music in the Parks Competition in San Diego April 29-30.

The students took the overall first-place trophy for the entire competition. First-place trophies also went to both the seventh-grade Intermediate Strings Orchestra and the eighth-grade Advanced Strings Orchestra in their respective categories.

Niguel Hills also took home the Esprit de Corps trophy for teamwork, professionalism, performance and politeness and good conduct.

These are the first trophies ever for the NHMS orchestras, said instructor Yeon Choi.

"We are very proud of how hard these kids worked, how amazing they sounded and how well they conducted themselves," Choi said.

The trip was a two-day event sponsored by Music in the Parks at San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld. Students had time to enjoy the parks when they were not competing.

"Hopefully, the school would like to make this an annual event for future orchestra classes," Choi said.
