Local Girl Scout, 92, Still Fits Into Uniform, Celebrates Founding of Organization

Alice Wheaton helped commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts last week and recalled meeting famed aviator, Amelia Earhart.

A lot of women might be jealous of 92-year-old Alice Wheaton since she can still fit into her Girl Scouts uniform from the 1930s.

Wheaton, a former Girl Scout and resident of Vintage Senior Living at The Wellington in Laguna Hills, located on the border of Laguna Niguel, stepped back into the uniform last week in celebration of the organization's 100th anniversary.

Wheaton and other former Girl Scouts shared with each other their inspiring stories as scouts.

From Brownies, at the age of 8 in 1928, to the Golden Eaglet and finally troop leader for her daughter, Wheaton believes scouting prepared her for life.

Her experience parading with the civil war veterans, decorating Rose Parade floats, delivering May baskets to shut-ins and greeting dignitaries at the Burbank/Glendale airport earned her badges for every skill under the sun. However, her most exciting visitor was Amelia Earhart.

“I was chosen to hand Amelia flowers as she strode into the waiting room, leaving her plane to be refueled for her flight over the pacific. She was beautiful… tall, thin and a knockout in a silk shirt, jodhpurs, and riding boots,” said Wheaton.

Now in retirement, Wheaton is grateful for the ability to still take on challenges and follow the Girl Scout mantra, "lend a hand" and volunteer. Not only is Wheaton a passionate member of the Girl Scouts’ community, her family has three generations of Girl Scouts. Her mother designed the scout camp uniforms and led a troop for the junior high scouts. Wheaton took on the leadership role as the troop leader for Glendale scout troop 7 and Sherman Oaks, and daughter Katie is now a mariner scout.

Famous Girl Scouts include: Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton, Mariah Carey and tennis star, Venus Williams.
