Grab & Go: Fun Things to Do This Weekend, May 14-15

From a trip to the flower fields to a visit to the Ocean Institute, there's plenty to do this weekend.

1. Saturday, May 14, . Join in with the family for a 1.2-mile walk along the coastal bluff in Dana Point benefiting the Maddie James Foundation. The course is not suitable for dogs, strollers or ride-ons.  The walk begins at 7:30 or 8 a.m.  After the walk, registered participants are invited to enjoy the open house festival at the Ocean Institute, which will include refreshments, live music and crafts. 2. Saturday, May 14, the Flower Fields at Carlsbad  Due to spectacular late-season color (the best ever!), the Flower Field is extending its season through May 15. Cost is $10/adults and $5 for children ages 3 to 10. Children 2 and under are free. 3. Saturday, May 14,  Living History Day at Mission San Juan Capistrano.  This month's theme for "Second Saturday" is Victorian customs and etiquette. Join in from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. as the Living History Society creates drama and intrigue while sharing historical information through stories, demonstrations and crafts. 4. Sunday, May 15, Author & Illustrator Day at Pretend City, Irvine. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pretend City will host seven local authors and illustrators who will share their stories, talents and experience. The day also includes readings, book signings for children ages 4 to 8.  Call 949-428-3900 or visit pretendcity.org for more information.   

5. Sunday, May 15,  Marine Wildlife Cruise at the Ocean Institute, Dana Point.  Journey to the sea with Ocean Institute scientists, who will introduce you and your family to the local marine wildlife. Members pay $22/adult and $19/child (4 to 12 years old). Non-members pay $35/adult and $22/child (4 to 12 years).
